detroitosbornIPFamily Literacy Night- LitLab528105X2026-04-292026-04-2917:0018:30EducationYPurpose: Extend literacy beyond the classroom through family engagement. Research consistently shows that family engagement is one of the strongest predictors of student achievement, especially in early literacy. Students whose families participate in literacy events read more frequently, have higher reading scores, and display greater vocabulary growth. The effect is powerful in K–3, when foundational reading skills are developing. Family Literacy Nights bridge the gap between what children learn at school and how they practice those skills at home. When families understand how reading is taught and what their child needs, they can better support learning outside the classroom. Parents see themselves as partners in their child’s literacy journey. Strong literacy programs recognize that families bring their own stories, languages, and literacy traditions. Our family nights feature shared storytelling, multilingual read-alouds, and family bookmaking projects. These activities validate children’s identities and deepen their sense of belonging in school spaces. As a result, children show greater motivation and consistency in reading because home and school messages reinforce each other. Partners: Various! Including local authors, schools, and community-based leaderscaregiver-child
